Building a Legacy of Learning: Shaping The Future of Education

The Namie Foundation was founded by Alhassan Susso, a world-renowned educator and passionate advocate for educational equality. Inspired by his own experiences as an immigrant from The Gambia, Alhassan dedicated his life to transforming education for those who need it most.

His journey from a nearly blind teenager in America to becoming the 2019 New York State Teacher of the Year is a testament to his perseverance, leadership, and commitment to improving the lives of young people. Today he channels his passion into reshaping the educational landscape in The Gambia, where the majority of children lack basic numeracy and literacy skills. Under his leadership, The Namie Foundation has gained international recognition for its unique initiatives, such as the Gambia Teacher Prize, which celebrates and rewards outstanding teachers in the region. With a focus on professional development and capacity building, the foundation ensures that educators have the resources and skills necessary to make a lasting impact. Alhassan’s vision for education goes beyond classrooms—it’s about empowering teachers to be agents of change, uplifting communities, and providing every child with the opportunity to learn and succeed.
